"Huh, I never knew that existed." Emma said, with an awed impression. "But will I be well received there? I’ve heard that there are deaf people who are prejudiced against hearing people taking interests in their culture."

"There are, yes. But you’ll be fine. There are some workers there who are hearing or lip read and you probably won’t interact with a ton of people. If anything, I’ll get looks for translating the poetry for you. Not a lot of speaking goes on in there. It’s a wonderfully quiet place to have lunch." Sterling shrugged. "It’s up to you. You’re just having lunch with me. You’re not taking over the place."

"If no one will be offended with me being there, I’ll go. It sounds fun." Emma said, then gave a delayed wince.

"Oh…" Emma said, her mouth shaped like a goldfish. That was awkward. "Well, yea, I’d go. It sounds intriguing." she said, then winced. "And I’ll honestly try to make an attempt to not say things like that to your deaf friends."

Sterling smiled.

"They have better senses of humor than you might imagine. I’ll teach you a few words and phrases on the way. Nice to meet you. My name is. That sort of thing. You’ll be fine. No need to be nervous."

"Sounds good to me!" Emma said with a perky smile before she rubbed her forehead. "Good thing they have a sense of humor because this would have been a lot harder than I thought…"

"It’s going to take all of my willpower not to troll you in there." Sterling smirked sideways at her as he gathered his suit jacket from the back of the chair and walked with her. "But hey, maybe you’ll get a sign name if you make some friends."

Emma lightly punched him. “You do that, and see if I’ll help you with ordering from that authentic Korean BBQ place.” she said, then gave him a curious look. “Get a what? What’s a sign name?”

"It’s…" Sterling thought for a moment. "It’s a hand sign created specifically to be a person’s name. So you don’t have to fingerspell it out every time. But only a Deaf person can give you a name sign. Usually the first letter of your name combined with… a personality trait or something about you."

"Huh, I never knew that existed." Emma said, with an awed impression. "But will I be well received there? I’ve heard that there are deaf people who are prejudiced against hearing people taking interests in their culture."

Emma smiled in spite of her post-birth exhaustion. “Looks like someone feels safe with Daddy.”

"That’s because she knows Mommy is nearby if Daddy messes up."

"You’ve had plenty of practice with…

"Oh Teddy, she was just teasing."

"You’ve had plenty of practice with Jenny and Oliver. This one should be a cakewalk."

"But I wasn’t an old man back when they were born."

"An old man? Honey, you’re not that old. Where did that come from?"
