Understanding, Emma nodded and headed towards the closet, being extra careful opening it and maneuvering inside with enough space for Ted to join her.

Quickly following after her, Ted slipped in and shut the door. He held a finger up against his lips and leaned to press his ear against the door, listening to the footsteps passing by.

Emma remained quiet for him, but she couldn’t shake off the sinking feeling in her stomach. What if someone decided to look in and find them? They were sitting ducks this way. Nervous, she edged closer to Ted, hugging his waist and burying her face in his chest.

Emma was about to speak again, but she hushed when she saw Ted motion for her to be silent. It was foolish to think they could talk about things of that nature at a time like this. Her eyes followed as he pointed to the door, where she gave him a look of confusion. How was a janitor’s closet going to help them?

Ted tried not to look frustrated. He was so close and yet so far. He made a sort of peek-a-boo motion with his hands over his face, mouthing the word ‘hide.’

"Yea, and we’ll get married and have little babies who can fix leaks and speak in a different language before they turn three."

"Exactly. And if they’re anything like you, they’ll turn out just fine." Ted pretended to hear someone coming and motioned for Emma to be quiet. The closet door was just ahead. Looking over at her, he pointed to the door, seeing if she’d understand that he wanted them to take cover in there.

Pausing, Ted turned to pull Emma closer, wrapping an arm around her as if he was trying to shield her eyes with his body. In actuality, he wanted her close so she couldn’t run off. “We’ll find them, sweetheart.” he said, continuing to walk. “I’m sure…

Ted gave her a trusting smile before starting to lead her towards his stash. While he hadn’t wanted to run into Emma, perhaps this was better. A SHIELD agent wouldn’t shoot her and she was small enough to carry if he needed a living shield. “I was so worried about you.” he said, looking behind him to give her a worried look. “I needed to come find you. If something had happened…” He let the words drift away, hanging his head as if the thought was too much for him to bear.

"I know, me too…" Emma said gently, averting her eyes from the sight of fallen agents around them. "We have to find Sterling, and Bobbi. They may need help."

"You’re right…" Emma said, sighing as she nestled closer to Ted. "I love you."

"We have to get out of here." Ted agreed. He quickly ran the building schematics through his head. His stash was nowhere near where all the usual exits were, but there was one emergency stairwell not too far from it. "Come on." He took her hand. "We have to go this way. I think…I think there are HYDRA agents back there."

Emma nodded her head, ever shy and ever trusting. “Okay Teddy…” she said, squeezing his hand. “I’m so glad you’re safe. I don’t know what I would have done had something happened to you.”

And just like that, Ted snapped back into the man he was supposed to be around here. Forcing himself to look afraid, he turned to look at the woman running towards him.

"Emma." he said quietly, taking a few steps towards her before wrapping his arms around her.

"Teddy, oh Teddy, thank god you’re all right." Emma said, hugging him tightly. She pulled back after a moment, fear on her face. "We have to leave. HYDRA has infiltrated SHIELD. P-pe-people are dying…"

Ted continued to make his way down the hallway, pretending to be shocked and scared when a group of SHIELD agents would run by and being quiet and deadly as he took out individual ones in his way. He had been keeping a secret stash of things in one of the abandoned closets and had every intention of getting it before he got out.

He cleared the corned of the hallway and continued towards the Linguistics department. The bodies lying around told him that most of the action had already taken place, which almost disappointed him. Tucking the gun away for safekeeping, he stepped over a bleeding agent and continued on his way, hoping he wouldn’t run into anyone that would blow his cover.

Hearing footsteps, Emma stood rigid, her fear freezing her in her place. Some agent she was if she couldn’t even force herself to take cover. She feared for her life, believing these were her final moments until she saw the owner of the footsteps as he made his way down the hallway.

"Teddy!" she said, relaxing and rushing towards him.

Chaos.

That was the only word that accurately described what was currently happening around him. Co-workers turning against each other, friends shooting at friends, people ducking and covering. It was like someone had turned on a light and all the roaches had to flee before they were squashed. But there was one plus side to all the chaos: it made it easy to hide.

A fake surprised expression and a few changes in tone was all it took for people to look right past him. But he had been used to that. Perfecting the act for this day specifically. Make everyone like you, make it easy to overlook you in the workplace, and you’d be free to do whatever you needed. And he did his job well. He convinced everyone to exit the premise through one way so he could escape through another. Hopefully, he’d remain undetected.

He had swiped a stun gun someone had left lying on the floor and used it on the agent in the hallway, switching the stun gun for the agent’s real one. After checking his corners, he headed towards his extraction point, keeping an eye out for anyone he needed to put down.

What in the world was happening?

One minute Emma had been snagging the last sprinkled doughnut in the break room to the next hearing gunfire in the hallway outside of Linguistics.

The sounds were getting closer, and Emma covered her mouth in terror when red blood splashed against the frosted glass of the door leading outside.

"Oh my god…" She whispered, the doughnut falling from her fingertips. Who was attacking them? Swallowing her panic, she hid beneath her desk, praying that no one would come inside and find her. She didn’t have a way to protect herself from gunfire. All she could do was translate gunfire in seven different languages.

Suddenly, the computer monitor screens lit up and an agent unknown to Emma began speaking about the situation at hand.

"… HYDRA…" Emma whispered, waiting patiently until it seemed as if the close was clear. She needed to find a way out or else she wouldn’t live to see tomorrow.

Opening the door, she peeked outside, stepping over the body of the fallen agent while silently mourning his loss.

'I'm so sorry…' she thought, trying not to cry.
